Millions of years ago, terror birds (Phorusrhacidae) roamed the open landscapes of South America. They were the apex predators of the Neogene and Palaeogene periods: up to 3 metres tall, with long legs and a hooked beak, these flightless prehistoric hunters reached speeds of up to 50 km/h. Their extinction is thought to be linked to the formation of the land bridge between North and South America, which allowed competing predators to migrate, and to climate change.
With this spectacular silver coin, CIT impressively brings these forgotten giants back to life.
